What Is NPSH Available?
NPSH available describes how much suction-side head is available above the liquid vapor-pressure condition at the pump reference point used by the calculation. It is determined by the system, not by the pump model.
Suction pressure, elevation, friction losses, liquid temperature and vapor pressure can all influence the available margin before local pressure approaches vaporization conditions.
NPSHa vs NPSHr
NPSHa comes from the installed system. NPSHr is pump-specific data from the manufacturer’s tested hydraulic performance information at the relevant operating point. Compare them using the project-specific margin or applicable engineering guidance; a simple positive difference is not a universal guarantee.
What Reduces NPSH Available?
Lower suction pressure, greater suction-side hydraulic losses, higher vapor pressure, unfavorable suction elevation conditions and restrictive suction piping can reduce the available value.
