Goulds 3196 Frame Size & Power-End Compatibility Guide
Identify the installed Goulds 3196 generation and power-end family before cross-referencing a replacement part. Start with the frame designation, pump size, nameplate, OEM reference or installed measurements. Pump size alone may narrow the possibilities, but it does not always distinguish MTX from LTX or MTi from LTi.

Legacy X-Series vs Goulds 3196 i-FRAME
The familiar ST / MT / LT / XLT family names span more than one Goulds 3196 generation. Use the generation as part of the identification process instead of treating the legacy and i-FRAME designations as automatically interchangeable.

* These are the shaft references stated in the Goulds 3196 i-FRAME interchangeability drawing for the shaft-and-bearing-frame assembly. Do not interpret one value as the shaft diameter at every axial location or as a complete manufacturing dimension.
Goulds construction-detail tables contain location-specific shaft and sleeve dimensions, and 17-inch / 350-BHP-shaft configurations have special dimensional notes. Verify the exact installed arrangement before ordering shafts, sleeves, bearing isolators, seal-chamber components or other power-end-sensitive parts.
Similar family names help organize identification, but the generation must still be confirmed before ordering power-end or interface-sensitive parts.
Use Pump Size to Narrow the Frame — Not to Confirm It
Pump size is useful as a first filter. The Goulds modular-interchangeability reference groups some hydraulic sizes under shared MTi/LTi power-end context, so the complete installed power end still has to be verified.

Why Pump Size Alone Cannot Always Separate MT from LT
Several Goulds 3196 hydraulic sizes are shown in a shared MTi/LTi modular-interchangeability context. The hydraulic size therefore helps identify the wet-end family, but it does not by itself prove which power end is installed.

Frame and Compatibility Questions
Is STX the same as STi?
They belong to corresponding small-frame generations, but STX is legacy X-Series terminology and STi is i-FRAME terminology. Do not assume every power-end component is interchangeable without confirming the installed generation and interfaces.
Can pump size tell me whether my 3196 is MTX or LTX?
Not always. Several hydraulic sizes can appear in shared MT/LT family context. Use the installed power-end marking, nameplate, serial number, OEM reference, photos or drawing to separate MT from LT.
What is the difference between XLT-X and XLTi?
XLT-X is the legacy 250-HP-family designation and XLTi is the corresponding i-FRAME designation. Goulds legacy documentation also identifies X-17 for the 350-BHP-shaft context, while i-FRAME documentation uses i-17. Do not treat X-17/i-17 as simply another spelling of XLT-X/XLTi; verify the installed generation and construction.
What does the shaft reference on this page mean?
It is the shaft reference used by the Goulds interchangeability drawing for the shaft-and-bearing-frame assembly. It is an identification aid, not a statement that the shaft has the same diameter at every axial location and not a complete shaft drawing.
Does identifying the frame automatically identify the impeller?
No. Impeller selection still requires the pump size, wet-end family, OEM reference, current trim or diameter, material and hydraulic duty.
What should I send if the frame is unknown?
Send the nameplate, serial number, complete pump size, OEM number if available, power-end photographs, removed-part photographs and any approved drawing or relevant measurements.
Are 332A and 333A mechanical seals?
No. They identify labyrinth bearing-isolator / oil-seal positions: 332A is outboard and 333A is inboard. The i-FRAME brochure lists INPRO VB-XX-D for these positions; the legacy X-Series brochure lists the legacy VB-XX-B designation, so generation must be confirmed before cross-reference.
