Why Buyers Compare OEM and Independent Aftermarket Parts
OEM parts may be required by an owner specification, warranty condition, proprietary design or an existing maintenance standard. An independent aftermarket route may also be worth evaluating when the installed pump uses a standardized configuration and the supplier can provide controlled drawings, material evidence, dimensional inspection and a clear nonconformance process. Neither route is automatically correct for every component or service.
The comparison should therefore be made at the level of the actual replacement scope: one impeller, a wet-end assembly, a power-end component, a seal-chamber part or a complete replacement pump. Ask what evidence will be supplied for that specific scope.

Goulds 3196 and 3198 are ITT Goulds model families, not Flowserve pump families. They may appear in cross-reference discussions, but they must be treated as separate OEM references and verified independently.
What Changes—and What Does Not—When the Source Changes
A change of supplier can affect drawing ownership, inspection records, material certificates, manufacturing route, delivery commitment and how nonconformances are handled. It should not change the agreed duty point, critical dimensions, material requirement, seal interface or acceptance criteria unless the buyer approves that change.

Identify the Exact Installed Configuration
Before requesting an aftermarket pump parts quote, collect the nameplate, model and size, serial or tag number, part number, pump drawing, parts list, impeller trim and photographs. Mark III identification commonly depends on the group and size as well as the component itself. A casing that looks similar may still differ at the nozzle, seal-chamber, wear-ring or shaft interface.
For a power-end component, also identify the bearing arrangement, frame, shaft extension, adapter and lubrication arrangement. For a wet-end component, record the impeller diameter or trim, casing material, wear-ring arrangement, shaft interface and seal configuration. If the records conflict, the controlling drawing revision and a dimensional review should resolve the discrepancy before manufacture.
Wet End, Power End or Individual Component?
Define the commercial scope explicitly. A wet-end assembly may include casing, impeller, shaft, wear rings, gaskets and a rear cover, while a power-end scope may include shaft, bearings, bearing housing, adapter and coupling interfaces. An individual replacement part may be suitable only after checking the mating parts already in service.
This distinction matters for both price and risk. Replacing one worn component can be efficient when the mating geometry and remaining components are verified. A complete replacement scope may be more appropriate when corrosion, erosion, repeated seal failures or uncertain records make partial repair difficult to control.
Materials and Seal Arrangement
Do not select a material from the chemical name alone. Review concentration, temperature, contaminants, velocity, solids, pH and oxidizing or reducing conditions, then compare the result with the project specification and documented material range. Alloy 20 / UNS N08020 should not be treated as automatically identical to CN7M; C-276 / UNS N10276 should not be treated as automatically identical to CW2M. Casting grade, product form and heat treatment can affect the final requirement.
Seal arrangement is equally configuration-specific. Confirm the seal chamber, shaft sleeve, stationary and rotating faces, elastomer, flush or quench requirement and available installation envelope. A part that matches an outline dimension may still be unsuitable if the sealing interface or operating conditions differ.
Inspection and Documentation to Request
- approved dimensional or manufacturing drawing;
- model, size, group and part-number cross-reference;
- material certificate and heat-number traceability where specified;
- PMI or other material verification where required;
- dimensional inspection or CMM report for critical interfaces;
- dynamic-balance record for applicable rotating components;
- hydrostatic or other test report when included in the order;
- deviation and nonconformance handling process; and
- packaging, preservation and delivery commitment.
Delivery and Outage Planning
Do not rely on a generic lead-time promise. Ask for a written delivery commitment tied to the actual configuration, material, inspection scope and approval cycle. If the pump is supporting a planned outage, identify the date by which drawings must be approved, the date by which material must be released and the consequence of a dimensional or material nonconformance.
When the outage risk is high, consider whether a complete inspected assembly, critical spare or staged approval package is more useful than a nominally cheaper individual part. The right comparison includes the time required for fit-up, machining, rework and retesting.

No. Fitment must be verified against the exact model, size, group, drawing revision, material, seal arrangement and mating components.
Are Goulds 3196 and 3198 Flowserve pump models?
No. They are ITT Goulds model families. They can be discussed in a cross-reference project, but their identity and fitment must be verified separately from Flowserve and Durco references.
