  • Fluid composition, concentration, temperature, solids and specific gravity

Material selection for chemical process service

Possible wet-end materials may include 316 stainless steel, CD4MCuN duplex stainless steel, Alloy 20, Hastelloy C-276, titanium, nickel alloys and cast steel, subject to the selected design and service.

Material selection should be based on the complete process chemistry, including concentration, temperature, pH, chlorides, solids, velocity, erosion and corrosion mechanism. A part that fits dimensionally can still be unsuitable if its wetted material is not compatible with the fluid.

316 stainless steel may be suitable for many general chemical and water services, but some chloride or elevated-temperature applications may require a different alloy. CD4MCuN, Alloy 20, nickel alloys, Hastelloy or titanium should be evaluated against the actual duty rather than selected from a generic material ranking.

Mechanical seal selection requires a separate review of seal faces, elastomers, metal parts, pressure, temperature, emissions requirements and flush or barrier plan.
