Use the applicable OEM drawing, approved dimensional cross-reference and agreed inspection records for the quoted configuration. The inspection package may include dimensional reports, material records and applicable hydrostatic or performance test records when specified; confirm the exact deliverables in the quotation.
Quality and Compliance Assurance
For the identified compatible configuration, release the replacement only after the quotation states the applicable model, size, frame, retained interfaces, material grade, inspection scope and acceptance documents. 100% interchangeability refers to that reviewed configuration; it is not a blanket claim for every Goulds 3196 variant or every component.
Seal Chamber Interchangeability: Where Most Compatible Claims Fall Apart
The seal chamber is a critical fitment interface. Compare the register bore, axial position, shaft and sleeve relationship, stuffing-box or seal-chamber depth, and the specified seal arrangement against the installed configuration and approved drawing. A model name alone does not establish seal fit.
For an identified compatible configuration, the replacement drawing should state how the impeller, casing, cover, shaft and seal chamber correspond to the installed pump. Confirm the mechanical-seal arrangement and any auxiliary plan requirements before release; dimensional similarity does not by itself approve a seal system.
Baseplate Compatibility: Same Bolt Pattern, Same Pedestal Alignment
One detail that turns a quick overhaul into a multi-trade project is the baseplate. The Goulds 3196 family uses a frame-specific bolt-down pattern with a defined pedestal height that sets the shaft centerline relative to the base. For an identified compatible configuration, the replacement drawing should state the bolt-hole pattern, pedestal or foot geometry, shaft centerline and motor or coupling position to be retained.
Do not assume a baseplate will accept a replacement because model names match. Compare the installed drawing and measured interfaces first. If drilling, slotting or shimming would be needed, record it before order release; this is a fitment decision, not a universal drop-in promise.
Wet-End Materials: Confirm Grade and Service Conditions
Chemical process environments do not tolerate guesswork around metallurgy. Select the wet-end grade from the actual concentration, temperature, contaminants, velocity, solids, pH and oxidizing or reducing conditions, then state the approved grade in the quotation. The following are examples to review, not a universal material recommendation:
- 316 Stainless Steel (CF8M): General chemical service, organic acids, caustic solutions
- CD4MCuN Duplex (1A / 1B): High-strength, superior chloride SCC resistance, seawater and brine services
- Alloy 20 (CN7M): Sulfuric acid at moderate concentrations and temperatures, mixed acid streams
- Hastelloy C-276 (CW2M): Wet chlorine, hydrochloric acid, aggressive mixed-acid environments
- Titanium Grade 2: Nitric acid, oxidizing chlorides, bleach solutions
- Nickel (CZ100): High-temperature caustic soda, alkali concentration
- Ductile Iron / Carbon Steel: Non-corrosive transfer, water services, non-process utilities
Confirm the approved material grade, casting or wrought designation, heat-number traceability and inspection documents required for the identified configuration. Alloy selection and documentation should be accepted for the actual service before machining or order release.
What the Verification Package Should Support
A useful replacement package lets the buyer and repair shop compare the installed configuration with the proposed unit before release. Ask for the applicable drawing, interface cross-reference, material documentation and agreed inspection records.
- Dimensional evidence for the retained mounting, nozzle, shaft and seal interfaces.
- Material identification and traceability matched to the specified service.
- Hydraulic duty, impeller trim and test requirements stated separately from dimensional fit.
