Food and beverage plants use process pumps for much more than direct product transfer. CIP systems, utility water, wastewater, chemical cleaning, cooling water and bulk ingredient services all require reliable centrifugal pumps that can handle demanding operating conditions.

For these applications, an ANSI/ASME B73.1 process pump can be a practical solution. However, an ANSI pump is not automatically a sanitary pump, 3-A certified pump or EHEDG-compliant food-contact pump. The correct selection depends on the service, wetted materials, seals, surface requirements, operating duty and documentation.

This guide explains how to evaluate an ANSI process pump for food and beverage applications and when a Goulds 3196 or Durco Mark III replacement may be appropriate.

When Can an ANSI B73.1 Pump Be Used in Food & Beverage?

The most important question is whether the pumped liquid directly contacts the food product. For an ANSI pump food beverage selection review, classify the service first, then verify construction, materials, seals, hydraulics and documentation.

  • Direct product-contact service: The pump may require hygienic design, cleanability, drainability, approved materials, surface-finish control and applicable 3-A, EHEDG or regional requirements.
  • Non-product-contact service: ANSI process pumps may be suitable for CIP supply, wastewater, cooling water, utility fluids, chemical cleaning solutions and other plant services.

Search terms such as food grade centrifugal pump and sanitary centrifugal pump can describe a different hygienic equipment decision. ANSI/ASME B73.1 defines dimensional and design requirements for chemical process pumps. It does not by itself certify a pump for direct food contact. Food-contact compliance must be evaluated for the complete wetted assembly, including metals, elastomers, coatings, gaskets and seal components.

A food processing plant may use ANSI process pumps successfully in utility and CIP systems without using them as direct product-contact sanitary pumps. Confirm the exact service before selecting the pump design.

What to Check Before Selecting a Food and Beverage Process Pump

1. Wetted materials

Material selection should be based on the actual liquid and cleaning cycle, not only on the industry name. Review concentration, temperature, pH, chloride level, contaminants, solids, velocity and exposure time.

These materials are candidates for evaluation, not automatic proof of food-contact compliance. If the pump handles food directly, request the required material and component documentation for the specific project.

2. Mechanical seals and elastomers

The seal package can determine whether a pump is suitable for a particular cleaning or process cycle. Review:

  • Elastomer type and temperature limit
  • Seal-face materials
  • Single or double mechanical seal arrangement
  • Barrier or flush-fluid requirements
  • Chemical compatibility during CIP
  • Leak detection and maintenance access

EPDM, FKM and PTFE are not interchangeable in every service. The correct choice depends on the chemicals, temperature, pressure and required regulatory documentation.

3. Hydraulic duty

A replacement pump must be checked against the actual operating point:

  • Flow rate
  • Total differential head
  • Fluid temperature and viscosity
  • Specific gravity
  • Available NPSH
  • Motor speed and power
  • Solids or entrained gas

A pump can be dimensionally compatible with an existing Goulds 3196 or Durco Mark III unit while still requiring a different impeller trim, motor power, seal arrangement or material selection for the new duty.

If the application requires a 3-A symbol, EHEDG certification or another specific hygienic approval, confirm that requirement with the equipment supplier and the plant quality team before ordering.

Can a Goulds 3196 or Durco Mark III Be Replaced?

For many food and beverage utility applications, ANSI pump replacement is possible when the replacement is reviewed against the original equipment data.

  • Casing and nozzle dimensions
  • Baseplate and mounting arrangement
  • Shaft and bearing-frame configuration
  • Impeller diameter and hydraulic duty
  • Seal chamber and mechanical seal dimensions
  • Wetted material and corrosion requirements
  • Motor power, speed and rotation

Dimensional interchangeability should be confirmed from drawings and measurements. It should not be assumed from the model name alone.

A dedicated hygienic pump should be evaluated when the liquid is a direct food product, the process requires validated cleanability, or the project specification requires 3-A, EHEDG or another sanitary approval.

Are ANSI B73.1 pumps sanitary pumps?

No. ANSI/ASME B73.1 pumps are chemical process pumps. They may be suitable for food-plant utilities, CIP and non-product-contact services, but direct product-contact use requires separate hygienic and regulatory evaluation.

Can 316 stainless steel automatically be called food-grade?

No. The alloy alone does not prove compliance. The complete wetted assembly, surface condition, elastomers, seal components, intended use and applicable regulations must be reviewed.

Can a Goulds 3196 be replaced with an ANSI equivalent pump?

In many cases, a replacement can be engineered around the original dimensions and duty. Confirm casing, shaft, impeller, seal chamber, motor and operating conditions before ordering.

What information is needed for a pump replacement quotation?
